Terry Grice
Sheriff
Sheriff Terry Grice, who was sworn into office on January 4, 2021, comes to the Sheriff’s Office with 22 plus years of law enforcement experience. Sheriff Grice was born and raised in Medina, graduated from Medina High School, and received a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice administration from Tiffin University. In 2006, he graduated from Police Executive Leadership College (PELC) and in 2007, he graduated from the FBI National Academy.
Sheriff Grice began his career as a Special with the Medina Police Department in December of 1998. He also served as a fireman for the Medina Fire Department from 1996-2006. In 1999, he was hired by Montville Township Police Department as an officer, was promoted to sergeant in 2003, and he was selected as Chief in November of 2011 where he served in that role for over nine years.
Sheriff Grice is committed to serving Medina County through participation in a variety of non-profit organizations. The Sheriff serves as Executive Director of the Medina County Police Activities League (MCPAL), which promotes positive relationships between law enforcement agencies and county youth. He also sits on the boards of MHRB (Mental Health Recovery Board) and the Lincoln Foundation.
Sheriff Grice and his wife, Cindy, who is the Director of Adult Education at Medina County Career Center, have two sons and reside in Montville Township.
Rebecca Byrne
Administrative Services & Program Director
Rebecca Byrne serves as the Director of Administrative Services and Programming. Director Byrne has more than 15-years of human resource experience, spending 6 years as the Program Director for the Montville Township Police Department. Director Byrne is responsible for human resources, purchasing, CCW and webcheck, grants, and community programming, including Medina County Police Activities League (MCPAL), Take Control Teen Driving and Juvenile Diversion.
Eric Bors
Captain
Captain Eric Bors is a graduate of Elyria Catholic High School (1993), has a degree in Criminal Justice, is a graduate of The Supervisor Training and Education Program (STEP XI), The Police Executive Leadership College ( PELC 77) Certified Law Enforcement Executive (CLEE XXVI) and has completed both his Master Criminal Investigator as well as his Master Evidence Technician certifications from The Ohio Police Officer Training Academy. He has served on road patrol, as a detective, been on SWAT and worked in narcotics since graduating from The Medina Police Academy in 1999. Captain Bors oversees the Detective Bureau, Transport Division, Corrections Division, policies and procedures, and is a firearms range instructor. Captain Bors is a resident of Medina County.
Kris Conwill
Captain
Captain Kris Conwill is a graduate of First Baptist Christian School of Medina (1995). He has a bachelor’s degree in justice administration and an MBA in leadership from Tiffin University. He is a graduate of the Police Executive Leadership College (PELC 56). Captain Conwill has served as a patrol officer, supervisor, basic academy and IPMBA bicycle patrol instructor since graduating from the Medina County Law Enforcement Training Academy (2000). Captain Conwill oversees the Patrol Division, Court Security Division, Civil Division, Communications Division, Information Technology Department, special projects, SWAT, School Resource Officers, and budgeting.
Dean Lesak
Lieutenant
Lieutenant Lesak has served the Sheriff’s Office since 1997. He has held the positions of Corrections Officer, Deputy, Sergeant and Staff Sergeant. He has served as a Corrections Field Training Officer, member of the SWAT team, Assistant Jail Administrator, Administrative Commander of the Jail, and Administrative Services Commander. He is currently assigned as the Jail Administrator.
Lieutenant Lesak has served in the United States Marine Corps and is a veteran of Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He is a graduate of the Police Executive Leadership College (PELC) and of Leadership Medina County.
Lieutenant Lesak resides in Medina County and has been involved in a variety of community functions. He has assisted in coaching little league sports, served eight years on the board of directors for Alternative Paths, Inc., and served on the board for the Medina County Coalition for Suicide Prevention. He enjoys physical fitness that includes weight lifting and running marathons.
Scott Schmoll
Lieutenant
Lieutenant Scott Schmoll has served with the Medina County Sheriff’s Office since 1990. Lieutenant Schmoll has served as a Dispatcher for four and a half years, Patrol Deputy for eight years, and as a Patrol Sergeant for fifteen years. He is a Field Training Officer, Drug Recognition Expert, and Emergency Response Driving Instructor. Lieutenant Schmoll is currently the Patrol Division Commander, and oversees the Juvenile Diversion and Take Control Driving Programs. Lieutenant Schmoll also serves as a volunteer firefighter and paramedic with the Spencer Community Fire District. He is a member of the Medina County Water Rescue Team and is a regional coordinator for the State of Ohio Drug Recognition Expert Program.
Lieutenant Schmoll is a 1987 Graduate of Brunswick High School. He also served for six years in the Ohio Army National Guard. Lieutenant Schmoll completed his Associates Degree in Criminal Justice from Eastern Gateway Community College in May of 2021. He is also a Graduate of The Ohio State University Public Safety Leadership Academy in May of 2021.
Samo Mernik
Lieutenant
Lieutenant S. Mernik began his law enforcement career with the Medina County Sheriff’s Office in January 1995. Throughout his tenure, he has served in a wide range of assignments, including Corrections, Patrol, Patrol Field Training Officer, Patrol Field Training Supervisor, Detective, Detective Sergeant, Patrol Sergeant, and Transport Sergeant. He was instrumental in the implementation of the Sheriff’s Office’s first Motor Unit.
Lieutenant Mernik has also served on the SWAT Team and has been assigned to multiple specialized task forces, including the U.S. Marshals Task Force, Department of Homeland Security Task Force, Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force, and a full-time assignment to the FBI Violent Crimes Task Force.
He is a graduate of North Royalton High School and holds a degree in Criminal Justice and Political Science.
An avid outdoorsman, Lieutenant Mernik resides in Medina County with his wife and two children and actively volunteers with numerous organizations within the community.
Dave King
Lieutenant
Lieutenant Dave King began his career with the Medina County Sheriff’s Office in 2000. Over the years, he has served in multiple capacities including Corrections Officer, Patrol Deputy, and Patrol Sergeant. He spent 16 years as a member of the K-9 Unit, handling two canines, Hero and Rocky, and was part of a successful drug interdiction unit for four years.
Lieutenant King also dedicated 17 years to the SWAT Team, serving as Team Commander for four of those years. He now serves as the Administrative Lieutenant, overseeing a range of operational and training functions within the Sheriff’s Office.
Outside of his professional duties. Lieutenant King enjoys hunting, fishing, riding ATVs, and spending quality time with his family.
